How Did I Get Here?

For people struggling with depression, anxiety, or another co-occurring disorder, you may often wonder how you got to the present moment. For someone dealing with suicidal ideation, you may not have envisioned the future. You may not have even thoughts you would get to the next big milestone…but here you are! Pinnacle Recovery knows these moments can be bittersweet. We want to remind you to take it day by day. Don’t spend too much time worrying about the future. Focus on today. You’ll get through it.

Day by day

If you’re struggling with depression or an addiction, you may have struggled to see a future for yourself. Thinking about the next day may be too much to bear. That’s okay — take each day as it comes, one day at a time. Remind yourself that although the future can be scary, you deserve to get there. Take it day by day. Recovery from addiction is time-consuming and can be draining. Be sure to confront the day with your full attention and the tools you have learned. Each day is a battle. Treat it as such.

Don’t ignore the future, though

Although you must take things day by day, it’s important to have your future in the back of your mind. Make plans and get excited about something that’s coming up. It doesn’t have to be a major, life-changing event. It can be as small as getting coffee with a friend or watching a movie that comes out by the weekend. Making small goals can help give you the incentive to keep pushing through.

Be proud

Once you check off a milestone on your list, allow yourself to be proud of your accomplishments. Whether it’s a day sober, a week sober, or a month sober, you deserve to feel good about it. You deserve praise from yourself and others. Let it be known that you’ve reached a milestone. It’s something to be proud of!

Feel your feelings

You’ve been fighting day in and day out for a long time. This all-encompassing fight can weigh you down sometimes. Let yourself feel how hard it has been, but don’t dwell on it. If you’ve reached a milestone like a birthday or special event that you didn’t think you’d be here to see, allow yourself to feel your feelings. Feeling everything that comes with the moment is important. Don’t deny yourself those feelings.
