Why We Need Change
Most people resist change because it seems to be asking too much of their time and focus. Invariably, that’s the thing about growth is that there is a huge learning curve, inside and out. Change is necessary because:
- We are highly inventive as a species and we cannot evolve if we don’t try new things and become better
- Humans are unable to get over resistance to change if they don’t step outside the box
- Without change, you cannot pursue the things you want to achieve on your sobriety goal list. You have a second chance at life, so don’t waste it sitting around wondering when things will come to you
Why We Resist Change
There are myriad reasons why we resist change. It is common to do so but it is also a very human struggle. Animals and other creatures invariably know change is coming. Birds adapt with the season, cats and dogs in our homes adjust to having new babies in the house, new routines, even new surroundings when we move. They were never consulted nor asked but they see this new environment and adapt accordingly. We typically become afraid of change because:
- We fear the unknown. Accepting change almost always involves taking a leap of faith which some people struggle to do. Trust is involved and perhaps trust is hard for many people to accept.
- Not seeing the need for change. People who see it this way do not view that there is something to change. It is harder to adapt to change you cannot see nor accept.
- Familiarity breeds contempt. The more familiar you become, the less you go outside the box. It takes effort to break away.
There are things you can do in recovery to make things better for yourself. If you are struggling to accept change, try these tips for learning and growing:
- Consider all the benefits. We often see the negative side of change but there are many benefits as well. Knowledge is key to developing a more positive view of change
- When you accept the inevitable (that change happens) you can also accept change is good.
- Be aware of nostalgia. Don’t get wrapped up in the past and wondering about what was. There was real danger and risk in the past as well as some good times but not living in the present moment will not help you get focused here and now on creating lasting change.
- Keep a journal or a way of documenting your process. If you see the patterns you may be more likely to observe how changes have led to new opportunities and continue embracing the path until you find a way forward.
