What is an intensive outpatient program?

Pinnacle Recovery’s Utah Outpatient Rehab programs are here to help those who need addiction treatment, but either cannot attend an inpatient program or may not need the intensive therapy that inpatient offers. While we strongly recommend inpatient treatment for most patients, there are many situations in which outpatient treatment is the best option.

Intensive outpatient programs, like our Utah Outpatient Rehab, are programs that are designed for individuals who need help with drug or alcohol but are either so situated in their lives that they cannot uproot themselves and go away for 30 days, or have not advanced far enough into their addiction where inpatient treatment is warranted.

Many addictions, depending on severity, need medical attention that can only effectively be given in an inpatient setting. But less severe addictions need treatment too, and this is where a program like our Utah Outpatient Rehab comes in. Programs like this are a great option for those who need a happy medium and a steady support system to help them in their recovery but would like to continue to live at home during this process.

Outpatient programs may be medically focused, such as methadone clinics, or they may be a combination of therapies, on a more frequent schedule. They may also include experiential therapy, which our Utah Outpatient Rehab offers onsite.

Why would I need outpatient treatment?

To a person who is attempting to get clean and sober, their recovery must be the most important priority in their life. The reason for this is fairly easy to see because a person who is not well mentally or physically, and suffering from addiction cannot expect to live a happy or useful life. They will more then likely begin to lose the things that are most important to them and their ability to cope with the daily issues that life serves them will become non-existent. With that said, making recovery your first priority does not always mean that you have to go away to treatment for an extended period of time. For some people this simply means attending an outpatient program.

The type of person who is well suited for our outpatient program is someone who cannot get away from familial responsibilities long enough to attend a 30-day rehab program. They may have children to raise or a family to take care of and because of this attending an inpatient program would be pretty much impossible. For a person like this, going away to treatment could possibly cause more damage than good and so outpatient is a great option for treatment.

There are others who cannot financial afford to leave work for an extended period of time. Doing so would cause an unnecessary burden on them or their families and so they need a program that they can fit into their schedule, one that offers them the structure and support they need, will not adding any undue pressures on their already full life.

For people of this caliber, attending an outpatient program could be the answer they need, but it is important when making the decision to forgo inpatient treatment and attend outpatient treatment, that you discuss it with a trained professional in order to ensure that you are being 100% honest with yourself about your needs.

A person who is severely addicted to drugs or alcohol may not get the care they need in an outpatient program. They may find the draw back to drugs and alcohol too strong for them to contend with and because of this could run a risk of relapsing back into old behaviors.

While outpatient does offer a great solution for those people who cannot simply leave their life behind for a month or so, living at home while attempting to get clean and sober does present certain challenges that inpatient does not. Many people used or drank in their homes and being in this environment while attempting to stop using can sometimes be too much for a person. They may find that dealing with the pressures of being surrounded by their family is overwhelming to them or that being around their friends who still drink or use drugs is too much of a trigger. Luckily though, if these things do occur, a client can always step up their level of care to inpatient and get the extra support they need to have a successful recovery.

What can I expect at Pinnacle’s outpatient programs?

Flexibility is key to any inpatient program, because many patients have other pressing obligations, such as family, school, or work. While it is important to remember that recovery should be the highest priority, we understand that everyone has a different situation and because of this they may need a treatment schedule that they are able to fit into their already busy lives. We handle outpatient treatment with the same level of personalization as our inpatient rehab. We understand that everyone’s situation and addiction is unique and so Pinnacle offers a variety of on and off-site intensive outpatient programs.

While our outpatient program is less intensive than our inpatient program, this does not mean that the level of care and support you receive is diminished. Many of the same therapies we offer in inpatient are offered in outpatient, just on a shorter time schedule since you will not be attending every day of the week. Our staff is acutely aware of how to best serve a person who is attending one of our outpatient programs and they are aware of the added challenges you may be facing. They will be there with you every step of the way as you begin your journey of recovery.
