Addiction is a complex disease of the brain and body, involving the compulsive use of one or more substances.
In 2017, nearly 20 million Americans battled a substance abuse disorder, with 1 out of every 8 adults struggling with both alcohol and drug use disorders. Sadly, many do not get the help they need and end up destroying their careers, relationships, or worse. Alcohol, for example, is the third-leading cause of preventable death in the United States and the opioid overdose crisis continues to impact families across the nation.
At Pinnacle, we know that addiction affects everyone differently, and we believe that everyone should get treatment that complements their needs and their lifestyle. We offer everything our clients need, including a dedicated outpatient program that combines flexible scheduling with high-quality, structured treatment for substance abuse.
Our outpatient rehab program in Salt Lake City is designed to help those who need addiction treatment, but either cannot attend an inpatient program or may not need the intensive therapy that inpatient offers.
Whether you or your loved one require professional assistance, an outpatient drug rehab center can help you achieve your current and future milestones. The road to recovery can begin today — here's what you need to know.
What Is Outpatient Rehab?
"Outpatient" treatment refers to care provided on a part-time or scheduled basis. To put this into perspective, a regular appointment with your doctor is considered an outpatient visit, whereas surgery that requires you to stay overnight is inpatient care. Meaning, outpatient treatment for addiction consists of regular visits each week, without needing to stay at the treatment center. Once you are finished your scheduled appointment or therapy session, you return to your home.
Scheduled appointments are offered during the day, at night, or on weekends, based on an individual's schedule. The ultimate goal of these programs is to help you better understand your triggers so that you can develop better coping mechanisms.
Inpatient vs Outpatient Treatment
It is important to note that although different, inpatient and outpatient programs are equally effective. This 2015 review reported that intensive outpatient programs are an important part of care for drug and alcohol use disorders. For most individuals, they are equally effective as inpatient treatment.
The idea here is to select the program that best suits you and your needs. While there are many things that overlap between inpatient and outpatient treatment, such as the types of therapy options offered and the level of support provided, the main difference is in the approach.
Inpatient treatment services require individuals to stay within a treatment facility, where they have access to care 24 hours a day. In contrast, an intensive outpatient rehab program allows individuals to come and go. This is beneficial for individuals who still need to go to work, school, or have family members they need to care for. You can discuss your circumstances with a Pinnacle Recovery team member to decide which option is best for you.
For example, when someone is severely addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, outpatient treatment may not be the best option. If the risk of relapse is too high, inpatient treatment may be the best option. That is why substance abuse outpatient services are designed for two categories of people — those who cannot take time away from their daily life to live in a residential treatment center and those that are not advanced enough in their addiction to warrant inpatient treatment.
Types of Outpatient Rehab
Each individual is unique in terms of their past and present, both of which impact one's recovery process. At Pinnacle Recovery, we understand that no two clients are the same. That is why customized treatment programs are provided based on each individual's needs and goals. Some outpatient programs are medically focused, such as detoxification or methadone clinics, whereas other programs combine a range of therapy options (i.e. psychotherapy and experiential therapy).
Depending on your specific needs and schedule, you may attend an intensive outpatient treatment program every day for five days straight. However, the most common treatment program consists of one or two sessions weekly over three months. Again, this will be adjusted to meet your personal needs. You may attend one individual therapy session per week, as well as a group therapy session. Depending on your progress, you may add or remove select weekly sessions.
Benefits of Outpatient Rehab
"Life" doesn't need to come between you and your sobriety. There are many benefits of outpatient rehab. Again, this option is not for everyone. However, for those that are a good fit, the benefits are immense.
These include but are not limited to:
- Being able to maintain employment — For those who need to maintain employment or run their own business, an outpatient program provides the flexibility needed to continue working while achieving sobriety.
- Access to safe detoxification — Detoxing from drugs and alcohol is incredibly uncomfortable and sometimes, dangerous. That is why it's important to seek medical detoxification. When you're monitored, you will not only feel more comfortable, but you'll remain safe. An outpatient facility can provide this service, and followup treatment as necessary.
- Affordability — Since clients do not stay on-site, outpatient treatment is much more cost-effective.
What Can I Expect from Outpatient Addiction Treatment in Utah?
Flexibility is key to any outpatient program — many patients have other pressing obligations that are the reason they have chosen outpatient treatment. While it is important to remember that recovery should be the highest priority, we understand that everyone has a different situation and may need a treatment schedule that they can fit into their already busy lives. We handle outpatient treatment with the same level of personalization as our inpatient rehab. At Pinnacle, we understand that everyone’s situation and addiction are unique, and so we offer a variety of on- and off-site intensive outpatient programs with different schedules and times.
While our outpatient program is less intensive than our inpatient program, this does not mean that the level of care and support you receive is diminished. Many of the same therapies we offer in inpatient treatment are offered in our outpatient programs as well, just within a more concentrated schedule since you will not be attending every day of the week. Our staff is acutely aware of how to best serve a person who is attending one of our outpatient programs and they are aware of the added challenges you may be facing. They will be there with you every step of the way as you begin your journey of recovery.
Why Choose Outpatient Recovery at Pinnacle?
To a person who is attempting to get clean and sober, their recovery must be the most important priority in their life. The reason for this is easy to see: a person who is not well mentally or physically and who is suffering from addiction cannot expect to live a happy, productive or fulfilling life. They will more than likely begin to lose the things that are most important to them, and their ability to cope with the daily challenges and concerns of life will fade. However, making recovery your priority does not always mean that you have to leave your life entirely behind to attend treatment for an extended time. Outpatient programs can be the right way for you to prioritize your long-term health and wellness without making your life more difficult than it needs to be.
If you are interested in learning more about outpatient treatment in Salt Lake City, we encourage you to reach out to us or to a healthcare professional in your area. When deciding to forgo inpatient treatment and attend outpatient treatment, it is essential that you discuss it with a trained professional to ensure that you are being 100% honest with yourself about your needs.
