Group Therapy for Addiction in Utah

A strong support system is at the center of addiction treatment. It is such an important aspect of recovery that the idea of a support system is even written into the 12 Steps. The word ‘We’ in the first Step represents the need for people to recover with, because to try to do so alone usually results in failure.

The need for community is a basic human instinct. It is something we all crave and without a sense of community often times people can feel lost and adrift in life. Many addicts and alcoholics who get sober share the experience of always feeling different, or apart from, for most of their lives and it is this isolating feeling that helped in part to drive them into addiction.

Once sober it is important for them to find people who they can connect with, not only because it will offer them the support they need in order to maintain their sobriety, but also because being able to relate with others is an extremely cathartic experience.

Imagine feeling alone for most of your life. Being hopelessly addicted to drugs and feeling like you are the only person on the planet that feels the way you do. Now imagine going into a treatment center and sitting in a room with 60 people who feel exactly like you do. Hearing them share your innermost thoughts and finally realizing that you are not alone, that you are not as strange as you may have thought in the past, but you are one of many who suffers from addiction.

At Pinnacle Recovery’s Utah Group and Family Therapy we understand the importance of this and that is what we attempt to create with our group therapy sessions. They are the beginning point in many people’s ability to relate with their fellows and by including the family in the therapeutic process, we allow families the opportunity to heal together and give them the tools they need in order to move forward into a new and sober life.

Why would I need group or family therapy?

Group therapy, like the one offered through our Utah Group and Family therapy sessions, has many benefits that individual therapy cannot offer. While there are times when individual therapy can be more helpful, like if a person is discussing something they are not yet ready to share with a group, it lacks the bonding experience that group therapy can offer and it does not bring the addict out of isolation in the same way that group therapy does.

At Pinnacle Recovery we understand that talking to a group of people you don’t know may seem overwhelming at first, but our Utah Group and Family therapy sessions are designed with this in mind and help to ease our client’s into sharing openly in a group setting. Many times client’s will take a few session before they start to open up, but once they do, they come to understand just how amazing of an experience being involved in group therapy can be. It allows them to see that other people know exactly how they feel and allows their peers to offer them insight into experience, and coping mechanism that may never have come up with on their own.

We also believe that incorporating family is crucial in the recovery process. Many times the family of the addict felt the full brunt of their addiction and so most of the healing needs to occur in the arena. Our Utah Group and Family therapy sessions create the space where this healing can occur and also allows our client’s to create a familial support group, who understand exactly what they need in order to continue their recovery. Having a support group within a group therapy session is important, but having a support system in your day-to-day life outside of rehab can really make a dramatic difference. That is why we try to include families in the recovery process, because at the end of the day having a supportive family can go a long way in creating a happy and healthy recovery.

What can I expect with Pinnacle’s group or family therapy?

Some treatment programs will involve one or both of these therapies. We have a strong focus on family, and if possible, will incorporate your loved ones into your healing process with family centered therapy sessions. Your addiction hurts your family and those that love you, so part of the healing process is fixing these broken relationships, especially with those who love you and want to see you healthy again.

Family therapy also helps your loved ones understand what they can do to help you during and after treatment. Addiction can be confusing for everyone involved, but having trained professionals guide you and your family through the early stages of recovery can help to do away with some of this confusion and create stronger bonds and relationships. Addiction treatment is a journey for the addict, as well as their loved ones. We recognize that, and offer support for all involved.

Our group therapy is present in most of our treatment programs.. Building a community of support, whether inpatient, outpatient, or aftercare, gives our client’s people to lean on, talk to, and people who will hold them accountable. It has been shown that relapse can be avoided with strong support systems, and so creating a support network early on can really help to improve the quality of recovery and help our client’s make it through the often difficult times of early recovery.
